If We’re Not the Right Match in Therapy
Starting therapy is a big step, and it takes real courage to reach out for support. It means you’re ready to look after your mental health and explore what healing or growth might look like for you. As a therapist and registered social worker, I know how important it is to find someone you feel comfortable with. The connection between you and your therapist can make all the difference, and this is part of why taking the time to have a consultation is so important in making sure that we mutually feel we are the right fit for working together.
Understanding When Therapy Doesn’t Feel Right
Sometimes, though, we might find that we are not the best fit for each other, and that is okay.
You might notice that you do not feel as at ease as you hoped to, or that my approach is not quite what you are looking for. You could be searching for someone with a different style or more experience in a specific area. There are also times when I may realize that what you are working through would be better supported by someone with different training or focus. None of this means that therapy has gone wrong. It simply means we are learning what kind of space will serve you best.
Therapy works best when you feel safe, understood, and connected. That comfort allows you to open up and do the real work that brings change. If something does not feel quite right, it is always okay to talk about it. Those conversations can help us decide together what you need moving forward.
Finding Support That Fits You
If we find that we are not the right match, I want you to know that I will fully support you in finding someone who might be a better fit. I am happy to offer referrals to other trusted therapists or social workers who may have the experience or approach that matches what you are looking for.
It is never personal or about hurt feelings. My role is to help you find the care that feels right for you, even if that means connecting you with someone else. The most important thing is that you get the support you need in a space where you feel comfortable and understood.
Finding the right therapist can take a little time, but it is worth it. You deserve a space that feels like the right fit, and I am here to help you find it.
